A fancy phone is no longer necessary. Here's how Google Photos can turn your ordinary photos into Ultra HDR

A fancy phone is no longer necessary. Here's how Google Photos can turn your ordinary photos into Ultra HDR

Our daily photographs frequently do not turn out well when we are attempting to capture scenes with a lot of contrast. Google Photos has decided to solve this problem with a new feature that almost no one expected: it now lets you convert your regular photos to Ultra HDR after you take them, without requiring special settings when taking the photo or the latest mobile phone on the market.

Android Authority revealed this new development, which came as a surprise. Ultra HDR is the format Google launched with Android 14 and produces more vibrant colors and better detail in both dark and bright areas.

- How does Ultra HDR conversion work?

The mechanics are very simple. Google has integrated this feature into the editor settings section of Google Photos, in the same place where the old HDR effect was located. The interesting thing is that you can adjust the intensity with a simple slider and see the results in real time.

To experience this feature, you'll need at least Google Photos version 7.24.0.747539053, but don't worry if you update and still can't see the feature. As is usually the case with these new features, Google is gradually rolling them out from its servers. The same thing happened when they integrated Gemini into Google Photos, a feature that lets you search for specific content in your photos just by asking the Assistant.

What are the requirements to use this? Well, you need two basic requirements: Android  14  or later and an HDR-certified display.
