Google decides to bid farewell to Google Assistant. Gemini will be the new official assistant on Android

Soon, another app will be added to the list of old Google apps. One that's been with you on your Android device for years will be gone in 2025, though you likely won't miss it much.

It's time to consider getting rid of Google Assistant, an assistant that has been with us for many years to perform basic tasks, but it never established itself as one of those essential applications because its features were still far from delivering the productivity we dreamed of.

Well, Google just announced that the traditional Google Assistant won't be available on most Android devices before the end of this year.

The exact date is unknown, as it will be announced in due course, but it is expected to be announced months in advance.

As you can imagine, Google Assistant will be replaced by Gemini, Google's latest generative AI app, which will start being offered as the only option on newer Android devices.

We say latest because Google Assistant won't suddenly disappear, but will continue to exist on those devices running Android 9 or earlier that don't have at least 2GB of RAM, mainly because Gemini won't be fully compatible with these devices.

This means that Google Assistant is likely to be around for several more years, until you say goodbye to all those old devices.

On the other hand, Gemini technology will reach many other devices during this year, including watches, cars, tablets, and headphones. They also say they will bring a new Gemini-powered experience to speakers, displays, and TVs.
