We are going to bid smartphones farewell. OpenAI intends to introduce an AI gadget that will take the place of cell phones

OpenAI, the company behind today's most popular chatbot, ChatGPT, understands very well that to dominate the AI market, it's not enough to excel in software; you also need to be able to compete with major hardware companies like smartphone manufacturers.
That's why Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently revealed that his company has plans to launch an AI device capable of replacing mobile phones.
In a recent interview with the Asian newspaper Nikkei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly admitted that one of his company's main goals is to bring AI devices to market that can replace smartphones.
This should worry mobile brands like Samsung and Apple, as Altman has said they want to create an AI device as innovative as the first iPhone in 2007.
In the interview, Sam Altman also announced that they plan to manufacture the semiconductors that will be used in future AI devices themselves.
However, at the moment, Altman has not revealed any details about the OpenAI AI device that aims to replace smartphones, but he did reveal in a report published in the New York Times that it will be a device that has the ability to identify and name objects, in addition to “completing requests such as booking flights.”
This isn't the first time we've heard about OpenAI's AI device. In September 2024, former Apple designer Jony Ive confirmed that he was working on an OpenAI AI device.
However, this is still a risky bet on OpenAI's part, as all similar devices launched on the market, such as Humane's AI Pin or the Rabbit R1, have gone through the same process without success for various reasons, such as their high cost or questionable functionality.
