Meta is in the process of creating humanoid robots
Meta is working on hardware and software for humanoid robots, Bloomberg reported .
According to sources who spoke to Bloomberg, a new group within Meta's Reality Labs division will start creating hardware for humanoid robots that can carry out household tasks.
Meta is looking to develop the AI, sensors, and underlying software that other companies can use to build robots and sell them to the public, meaning the company may not initially launch a robot under its own brand.
Meta is reportedly in discussions with robotics companies, such as Unitree Robotics and Figure AI, about its future plans.
“The core technologies we’ve invested in and developed across Reality Labs and AI complement our efforts in robotics,” Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said in an internal memo seen by Bloomberg. “We believe expanding our portfolio in this space will further enhance the value of Meta AI and our mixed and augmented reality programs.”
Tesla has already unveiled humanoid robots, while other tech companies are entering the robotics market, and recent research by Apple has shown a new project for a smart lamp similar to the one used by the animation company Pixar, which is designed to interact with users via voice commands and gestures.
In this context, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently indicated that Apple is exploring the possibility of developing humanoid and non-humanoid robots within its future smart home system. For its part, Nvidia also has big ambitions in the field of robotics.
Meta’s new robotics team will be led by Mark Whitten, the former CEO of GM’s Cruise, a company that was developing self-driving taxis before the project was shelved. Whitten previously held executive positions at Microsoft, Sonos, Unity, and Amazon.
Meta continues to boost its investments in artificial intelligence, allocating $65 billion to this field this year, in addition to intensifying its efforts to market its smart glasses.
