Despite the importance of online security, a large portion of people use weak passwords without realizing the risks involved. Although today I am very interested in everything related to network security, when I started using the Internet (a few years ago), I was not aware of the importance of this topic. I always tried to use more or less secure passwords, but by not using a password manager, I tended to use the same password on some of the different websites I registered on.
Today, we already know the importance of using password managers that allow us to create secure passwords without having to remember them. One of the most recommended password managers is Bitwarden. I recently checked their website and saw that they have a tool that allows us to check how secure a particular password is.
While testing the tool, I found it interesting to see how secure one of the passwords I used at the beginning of my online journey was. As you might imagine, it wasn’t as secure as I thought at the time: Bitwarden notes that the password could have been hacked within two months.
If I compare it to some of the passwords I use today (generated using a password manager), Bitwarden tells me it would take centuries to crack them. Much better, right? It is undoubtedly a very useful tool that allows us to get an idea of how secure our password is.
As we always recommend, it is important to use unique and secure passwords on every site we sign up for. This way, in the event of a data leak, we will prevent attackers from accessing our other accounts, since the password will not be the same.
