When Windows 10 support ends in October of next year, a catastrophic event will occur

There's less than a year left until Windows 10 says goodbye to security support, but despite Microsoft's best efforts to try to convince users to upgrade to Windows 11, there are still millions of computers that don't want to make the move.

The problem is that this comes with a huge risk, and when that moment comes, it’s likely to be exploited by many cybercriminals to launch new malware or carry out massive hacks. Previously, there was talk that ESET was recommending switching from Windows 10 to Linux for security reasons, but it seems that this goes further than that.

It is not a virus issue, as there will be a very large number of users around the world who will be affected by this situation, which we have not seen before compared to other Microsoft operating systems.

Experts around the world expect a security disaster with the end of Windows 10 support

According to a recent report by ESET Germany experts, the cybersecurity crisis will come when Windows 10 goes out of support in October 2025.

"The situation will be more serious than the end of Windows 7 in early 2020," expert Thorsten Urbanski said.

Statistics show that 65% of users in Germany, 63% in Austria, and 56% in Switzerland are still using Windows 10  , which equates to about 35 million active computers with this operating system.

This means that all of these devices will be vulnerable to cybercriminals due to their vulnerabilities. Although the service of continuing to receive updates is offered for a fee, the price is high and will continue to rise over the years.

In this context, the expert notes that companies will be the most affected because staying on this operating system is not a profitable tactic, while the risk of being exposed to malware or hacker attacks will increase dramatically.

The two smarter options left are to upgrade to  Windows 11 or install a Linux distribution that suits each user’s needs. In the months remaining before  Windows 10's launch, many are likely to reconsider their decisions.
