There is a serious attack on these Google Chrome extensions. Delete them right away
Malicious campaigns that compromise the private data we use on our devices can arrive in multiple ways. Now a new one has been discovered that affects many extensions we can install in Google Chrome.
Let's start from the fact that we are talking about one of the most used browsers in the world, as it is a browser from the leading company Google in this sector and can be found on both desktop computers and mobile devices. Furthermore, the different extensions that we tend to install in the browser itself to improve its functionality play a fundamental role here.
Well, we’re telling you all this because 16 extensions for this browser were recently hacked in a large-scale attack. This means that they resulted in the public exposure of the personal data of more than 600,000 users around the world. Specifically, the attackers targeted extension developers in the browser’s official store, the Chrome Web Store.
To do this, phishing emails were used, and once the extension developers’ accounts were accessed, malicious code was inserted into the legitimate source code of the extensions themselves. Thus, the malicious code that was executed allowed the attackers to steal cookies and access credentials from users who installed and used these extensions in Chrome.
Below we show you the extensions affected by this malicious campaign that were discovered in recent days, and you should remove them quickly:
