Taking advantage of TikTok's predicament, Meta releases a new video editing app as an alternative to CapCut

While TikTok’s shutdown in the US was temporary, several ByteDance apps have disappeared from the Play Store and Apple Store. Among them is the most popular mobile video editor, CapCut, which is no longer available in the US. Meta has wasted no time in addressing the situation and has just announced Edits, the first video editor for Instagram.

“Edits, an Instagram app” is the new video editor that will be available on mobile devices to replace CapCut. The announcement of this app comes in the context of the TikTok ban in the United States, which is the right moment to offer a solution to the disappearance of CapCut. But what exactly does Edits offer? Let’s take a closer look at what this new app looks like.

It was Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s director, who introduced the Edits app. The introductory video gives an overview of everything that will be included in this new mobile video editor. However, it is important to clarify that it is not yet available, and in fact, everything indicates that it will be launched first in the App Store, as is usually the case with these new features.

It’s not entirely clear what the app will offer, leaving it a mystery to users. However, the little that appears on the App Store page dedicated to the Edits app is that it will have an interface similar to CapCut. The decision is not arbitrary, as Meta is looking to take advantage of the latter’s ban and thus successfully launch its new app.

The criticism directed at the Instagram application has not stopped in the last hours. Users saw the move taken by Meta as the work of a company specializing in collecting garbage, and they even went so far as to say that the company behind the Instagram application had been without an original idea for years. What makes the situation even more suspicious is the release date of edits.

Adam Mosseri indicated that edits will be available in March 2025, and the timeline seems to support user complaints, and everything indicates that Meta started working on this app after learning about the situation with ByteDance apps. Despite all that said, Instagram needs a video editor after leaving photos in the background.
