How to use DeepSeek, the controversial artificial intelligence program, without the Internet
The most recent of the numerous intelligent platforms that have surfaced in recent months is the Asian alternative DeepSeek. Due to its open-source nature, this proposal seeks to directly compete with other well-known proposals, like OpenAI's ChatGPT, for instance.
To begin using the corresponding chatbot, we simply need to visit the official website, as is customary with this kind of AI-based proposal. After that, we will have the option to sign up, for instance, using a Google account, in order to begin communicating with the AI. Obviously, at first we will need an internet connection to be able to get the most out of this platform we are talking about.
DeepSeek is expected to grow significantly in the coming weeks and months. But we must take into account that we also have the possibility to install the AI locally so that we can use it on our computer as if it were another application. In fact, as we will see below, we will not even need an internet connection to be able to use this intelligent platform once it is installed on the computer.
We can perform this process on multiple operating systems, including Windows, of course. For all this we will use a very useful program to do the same process with other AI programs; we are talking about Ollama, which we can download from the link below the article.
At this point we will be able to install this program that we mentioned in the traditional way on our computer. This will take a few seconds because it is a very light program and does not consume any resources from the computer.
When we run the program, we do not find any graphical interface, but we run it so that it remains running in the background. Now what we will do is open a command prompt window to download DeepSeek and install it locally on our computer. So first run CMD in Windows with administrator permissions:
Then type this command
ollama run deepseek-r1:8b
From that moment on, the actual download of DeepSeek AI will begin so that we can run it on our computer. Please note that the default size is around 5GB, so the process may take a few minutes.
Once the AI is fully downloaded, it will be available on our computer, and we can use it without an internet connection. To start it as an application again, we access the Windows command line and execute the following command with administrator permissions:
ollama run deepseek-r1:8b
At that point we can start interacting with the AI by typing the prompt we want to use the chatbot for. To exit we just have to type /bye
