How big is the Nintendo Switch 2? - IGN
But how much larger is the Switch 2 than its predecessor? Nintendo has not publicly released the size dimensions; however, we may guess based on the teaser and a recent leak. At CES 2025, a consumer electronics expo held earlier this month, we were able to get hands-on with a Switch 2 mock-up built by peripheral designer Genki.
We had no way of knowing how accurate the design was at the time, but Nintendo's latest teaser shows a console that is nearly identical to the original system, even down to the smallest features. As a result, the measurements we collected at CES are quite likely to be accurate for the Switch 2's final size.
So, how large is Switch 2? Let us be your (rough, approximated) guide.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
According to our calculations, the Switch 2 has an 8-inch screen. This is the diagonal dimension of the tablet's actual display portion (excluding bezels) from corner to corner, which is the worldwide standard for screen sizes. This size corresponds to an earlier rumor from early in 2024. Based on this, we anticipate the display to be around 177mm wide by 99mm high.
If this is correct, the Switch 2's screen will be over 30% bigger across the diagonal than the first console's 6.2-inch LCD display and 66% larger overall. That is a considerable rise. While larger isn't necessarily better, the Switch 2 might be a lovely-looking system to play on if the display technology is of high quality.
But how does the Switch 2's display compare to other portable devices? The Switch Lite features a smaller 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen; therefore, the new console's display will be 45% larger diagonally and 111% greater in surface area. Meanwhile, the Switch OLED features a 7-inch display, making the Switch 2 14% bigger diagonally and 30% larger overall.
When the Switch first came out in 2017, it had little to no competition, but in the age of portable PCs, there is now the Steam Deck to deal with. The original Steam Deck has a screen comparable in size to the Switch OLED; it also employs a 7-inch panel, although it has a slightly taller 16:10 aspect ratio than the Switch's 16:9. That implies that the original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED, with their 7.4-inch displays, are both larger than any Switch console to date. However, the Switch 2 will be larger than even the largest Steam Deck screen, measuring 8% larger on the diagonal and 11% larger in overall area than Valve's OLED display.

Nintendo Switch 2's Overall Console Size
The screen is significantly larger than previous Nintendo releases. As a result, the console is bigger. The original Switch has quite large pockets to slip into your jeans; thus, it appears that the Switch 2 will only fit into a large cargo pants pocket or a backpack.
When we measured Genki's mock-up at CES, we found it to be just over 10.5 inches from edge to edge, including the Joy-Cons, and 4.5 inches tall. Based on a lot of very professional-grade analysis (see: scaling images from the trailer to match our photos of the mock-up, adjusting them to actual size, and then measuring them with a tape), we believe the Genki mock-up is most likely true to Nintendo's final design—and thus the Switch 2 appears to be approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall.
For reference, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall. So, if our calculations are true, the Switch 2 is almost 25% bigger than its predecessor.
These dimensions would also place the Switch 2 around 61% bigger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the considerably larger Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).
It should be noted that we were unable to obtain specific depth measurements for the Genki mock-up, but all indications point to the Switch 2 being similar to the original Switch's half-inch thickness. So, despite the console's total footprint looking substantially larger, the thickness appears to be fairly comparable to its predecessor.
The new Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers and main screen unit.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con size
The transition motion in the Switch 2 announcement film hints that the Joy-Con controllers will stay fairly similar in width to those on the first Switch but somewhat taller. Using that as a starting point and our kind of scientific methodology based on scaled images, we believe the new Switch 2 Joy-Cons will be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall—the same width as the original controllers (excluding the slot system) and 13mm taller to match the size of the new console. If these estimates are correct, the new Joy-Cons are around 13% bigger than their predecessors.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
After determining the size of each Joy-Con, we can deduct it from the overall console size to estimate the size of the screen unit. We estimate that the Switch 2 screen unit is 200mm long and 115mm high. That is around 31% bigger than the original Switch version.
This unit size is large enough to accommodate the 8-inch 16:9 screen, resulting in an approximate 11mm bezel on either side and an 8mm bezel on the top and bottom of the display. The sides are slimmer than the original Switch, and the top and bottom bezels are similar to the existing console.
As a reminder, these measurements are all estimates based on our best efforts and may be incorrect when Nintendo officially publishes the console's dimensions. However, based on our experience with the Genki mock-up, we're fairly confident that we're on the right track, and we expect to see a console that's roughly 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally get hands-on later this year.
