Meta is preparing to build the largest submarine fiber optic cable network around the world

Meta is currently one of the most visited companies in the world, and applications such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are among the most used applications in the world, and now the American company wants to build a global submarine cable.

According to TechCrunch , Meta is planning to build a major submarine fiber optic cable that will circle the globe, a project that will be more than 40,000 kilometers long and could involve a total investment of more than $10 billion.

Meta will be the sole owner and user of the submarine cable, a first for the company and a milestone in its infrastructure efforts. The plan is set to start with a budget of $2 billion, but as the project evolves, that figure is likely to rise to more than $10 billion over the years of work.

Plans are already in place, but not the physical assets. Meta is expected to speak more publicly about the project in early 2025, when it will confirm plans for the cable, including its planned route, capacity and some of the reasons for building it.

Once completed, the cable will provide Meta with a dedicated conduit for data traffic around the world. The cable runs from the US East Coast to India, via South Africa, and from India to the US West Coast, via Australia, and around the world.
