This is how big companies play with your mind to make you buy their smartphones
Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo… It doesn’t matter which company we are talking about, they are companies and what they want is to make money. For this they need us to buy their products, or to have one of their mobile phones, tablets, laptops, TVs or any other device.
To do this, they invest millions of dollars in advertising campaigns of all kinds, and the more they reach, the better. It’s no secret. However, what you may not know is that more and more scientific techniques are being used to figure out what affects us, how it happens, and how to get the most out of it. Knowing how the human brain works can help increase sales, or at least that’s what neuromarketing is all about.
- Companies are interested in neuroscience.
Your brain processes an enormous amount of stimuli with every passing moment. As you can imagine, if we had to constantly pay attention to every little thing happening around us, we would burn out in just a few minutes.
For this reason, the human brain “filters” this information, prioritizing and paying attention to what it considers most important. What is this information? This is the key, this is what everyone wants to know about you. Knowing what attracts the human mind will make reaching potential consumers much easier.
- Measure what your mind likes
Scientists have been measuring our brain activity with all sorts of tools for years. Dozens of not-so-complicated experiments can be done that will show what our eyes pay attention to when we watch a video or what kind of sounds grab our attention the most. They are the key to discovering what elements to use to grab our attention.
One of the techniques we mentioned is eye tracking. As its name suggests, it relies on following the movement of a person’s eyes while attending to any type of content. In this way, it is possible to know which elements we look at for the longest time, what colors or movements catch our attention… etc.
On the other hand, we have echocardiography, which maps our brain for areas of greater or lesser activation. There are sophisticated devices capable of measuring brain activity when exposed to different stimuli, something that has been studied for many years.
We have mentioned only two, but there are many other techniques that study the chemical and physiological activity of the human brain. Neuroscience is the discipline that includes knowledge about the biology of the most important organ in the human being, and it is quite sufficient.
- Campaigns designed to attract you
With all the information gathered, and there is a lot, administrators can create all sorts of campaigns that take into account the principles of neuroscience to achieve the greatest possible reach. It's nothing new, it's not a method that was created just now, but it seems that large companies are increasingly realizing its usefulness.
In an ad for a company like Apple or Samsung, nothing is random. Every element, every color, every movement and every sound has been studied, keep that in mind the next time you see one. Maybe it will save you a hasty expense, maybe you can resist the temptation to buy something you are not sure about.
