Phone scams are becoming more sophisticated, and Google wants to help users in these types of situations, and to do so it has initiated a major change to its Calling app. What Google wants is for users to take a reasonable amount of time to report a call they receive when it is identified as spam.
While the idea sounds really crazy, it could actually serve as a way to engage users in the fight against phone scams. Until now, Google’s phone app only offered one option to stop these types of situations: blocking the phone numbers that perform these actions.
This initiative was discovered thanks to Android Authority . The Android media outlet analyzed the latest version of Google’s Contacts app. What it found in this version v155.0.697690833 is that Google is working on a new system for reporting unwanted calls.
The new system will ask users for more details about the call they received, and will present a series of options to choose from. In fact, it’s being pitched as a quick and easy way to complete a questionnaire designed to implement the way Google identifies calls that are received. The questions Google asks are categorized into two groups:
- What did the scammer ask for? - Full name - Download the app - Online payment - Password - None of these options
- What did the scammer pretend to be? - FBI - Friends - IRS - Police - Social Security Administration - None of these options
All of these options will give Google more context when it comes to figuring out how these spam calls are being made to trick users. It’s still too early to say when this feature will arrive, as Google is working on it, so we may know if it’s officially released in the coming weeks.
What is clear is that Google wants to put an end to spam calls, and of course give users tools to fight scams.
