Your Android Phone Limits Games to 60Hz, Here's How to Disable It

Android caps the frame rate at 60Hz in games in order to provide the best possible performance, but it’s a drawback considering that most smartphones today have a display that supports a 120Hz refresh rate. Many of these games include the cap by default, with no option to disable it. Fortunately, 9to5Google has learned that Android 15 has a solution to this problem.

The new version of Google's operating system has a hidden option that allows you to disable this 60Hz limit in games, regardless of whether the developer offers the option in their game or not. This of course allows any game compatible with a higher frame rate to run at the same frequency as the same screen. In this way, for example, if we have a mobile phone with a frequency of 120Hz, we can run the game at that speed.

The setting that disables 60Hz in games is somewhat hidden, but accessing it isn't too complicated; you just have to follow a series of steps.

First, you’ll need to enable Developer Mode on your device. You can do this by going to Settings > About phone and tapping on the Build number five times in a row. You’ll see a notification when the mode is activated.

Then, in Settings, go to the “System” option and click on “Developer options”. Finally, look for an option called “Disable default frame rate for games” and check the box. It’s that simple.

However, disabling the 60Hz limit in games also has some drawbacks. Running a game at 120Hz consumes significantly more battery power, and thus the level of autonomy can be significantly reduced. In addition, the device is likely to overheat, especially during long gaming sessions. On the other hand, it is important to note that not all games may support a higher rate at 60Hz.
