Using this trick, you can use the extensions that Google Chrome will remove for another year
We have been telling you for the past few weeks that Google will be removing quite a few extensions from Chrome for security reasons. This can become a problem for many users if they use some of them on a regular basis.
Keep in mind that this removal will affect some of the most popular add-ons in the official browser store. This basically means that the change will affect millions of users around the world. The main reason for all of this is partly due to the company not agreeing to the Manifest V2 add-on specifications . Google’s goal behind all of this is for the developers of these add-ons to update them to Manifest V3.
They consider the new standard to be safer for users, and therefore extensions that do not meet this requirement are being discontinued. In addition, we should keep in mind that all of this will affect the vast majority of Chromium-based browsers. Therefore, any extension that has not been updated or cannot be updated to Manifest V3 will be disabled by Google.
Given the fact that these add-ons have been popping up like a bubble over the past few years, this is not good news for many. The first solution that will come to your mind is to look for similar alternatives with similar functionality, but compatible with Manifest V3. However, below we will provide you with an alternative solution that may be very useful for you.
And as we'll see, there's a way to keep using add-ons without updating for longer with a simple trick.
- How to continue using blocked extensions in Chrome
First, we’ll tell you that Google offers business customers the option to extend support for these extensions in Chrome for one year. However, non-paying users will see the extensions disappear immediately. The good news is that we also have the possibility to use them with this trick that we’ll explain.
For all this we use the policy called ExtensionManifestV2Availability, which defines compatibility with classic extensions in Chrome. To do this, we will open the registry via the Windows+R command and put regedit
Then we reach the next path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Policies/Google/Chrome
Now we right click and select the New / Dword Value (32 bits) option which we name ExtensionManifestV2Availability. We double click on it and set its value to 2.
Now all we have to do is restart our computer. It is worth noting that this specific value tells Chrome to activate Manifest V2 and extend support for another year. This is a change that we can revert at any time if we see fit or if we decide that the blocked extensions are no longer safe. All we have to do is access the registry again and delete the value we just created.
