The world must leave behind legends in all fields and magazines, sports, art, politics and even the field of technology and information.

On October 22, 2009, Windows 7 was released and is the most popular and widely used operating system from Microsoft, along with Windows XP. Fifteen years later, about 40 million computers are still in use.

I previously presented on the blog a topic about Windows 7 and why users still prefer this system over others,  why most users still prefer Windows 7 .

So when Windows 7 went on sale, it was a huge success. Individual licenses cost over $100, and if you had multiple computers in your home, you had to buy one for each computer. The same went for businesses, but they had batch discounts.

Windows 7 didn't introduce any revolutionary new features. It did ensure that 64-bit programs wouldn't cause problems on non-Intel processors, and it introduced things like multi-touch support, an improved taskbar, support for virtual hard drives, or support for true multi-core CPUs.

But Windows 7 was popular because, unlike its predecessor, it performed well on all PCs, old and new alike.

Microsoft stopped updating Windows 7 on January 14, 2020, but it is still widely used by users.

One reason is that Windows 8 and 8.1 were the worst Windows operating systems in history, Microsoft’s first attempt to “sell” us touch-screen laptops, creating a hybrid system that convinced no one. And it’s still doing so with Windows 11.

In October 2024, according to statistics , 2.85% of PC users are still using Windows 7. It is estimated that there are between 1,000 and 1,500 million Windows installations, so taking an average value, about 35 or 40 million PCs are still running Windows 7, even though it poses a security risk.

Windows 7 was released on October 22, 2009, and is now 15 years old. It has been out of date for almost five years, but it refuses to die.
