These are the apps that consume the most 4G or 5G data on your mobile phone YouTube is in first place

Faced with a scenario where 4G or 5G mobile data usage becomes increasingly common among users, the apps that consume the most data per day are YouTube, with 193MB consumed during five minutes of app usage, followed by Disney which consumes 150MB every five minutes, and AllTrails which consumes 155MB for use during the same time period.

Mobile data has seen a 20-30 per cent year-on-year increase in personal consumption, according to a report from Ofcom. This system requires an internet access plan through your telecom provider, so while you can usually sign up for an unlimited data rate, on other occasions this option is conditional on a set number of megabytes.

In case you have a limited data subscription, it is advisable to know how many megabytes each specific application consumes, so you can manage its usage and avoid consuming all the data.

To know how much mobile data an app consumes, it must be taken into account that every action performed through a data connection incurs expenses. This means, for example, that every word, image or video viewed through a smartphone's web browser has its own data footprint, which is measured in megabytes. The same thing happens when you post a photo on Instagram or send messages via WhatsApp.

However, not all actions or applications consume the same amount of megabytes. With this in mind, and in order to find out which applications consume the most data on smartphones, Holafly, a mobile internet service company, conducted a study that reflects the amount of megabytes consumed by some of the most used applications with a typical usage of five minutes.

To make these comparisons, Holafly tested apps on an iOS smartphone, specifically the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and on a Xiaomi Redmi 9, and collected data consumption using the My Data Manager app and the result is below.

According to the data collected, YouTube came in as the mobile app that consumed the most data overall, totaling 193MB for five minutes of typical use. Close behind was Disney’s streaming content service, which managed to use 150MB over the same time period. Similarly, the hiking app AllTrails also made it into the top three, taking in 155MB. The rest of the rankings are shown in the image above.
