A couple of days ago I needed to convert some YouTube videos to text to send in print. There are many tools of this type on the internet, and while most of them do a decent job, they are not perfect, as they return the text without punctuation or line breaks. To solve this problem, in addition to the transcription tool itself, you will need the help of Chat GPT, as explained below.
To convert a YouTube video to text, you can use the website I used. All you have to do is paste the URL of the YouTube video you want to copy and it will convert the audio of the video into text. Although it doesn’t produce a well-formatted text, there are practically no errors. For example, in videos that are 15 or 30 minutes long, I only saw a few misspelled words, but the rest was fine.
Once you have the video transcript, to add punctuation and line breaks where appropriate, you need to use Chat GPT. Just go to chat.openai.com. If you are asked to create an account, do so. Then, you will enter the following text command, followed by the video transcript, like this:
Add punctuation and line breaks where appropriate in the following text...and of course include the text you copied.
If the video text is too long, Chat GPT will not fix the text in one go. It will stop when you have worked through a fair amount of text. You will have to press the Continue Generating button until it finishes processing the entire text. Finally, you can copy the text and send it to a Word document to print, if that is what you want to do.
Unfortunately, I haven’t found any tool that can perfectly transcribe a YouTube video into text, with its punctuation and line breaks. You’ll have to use Chat GPT for this. At least this way it’s faster than doing it yourself manually.
