Meta is laying off employees from Instagram, WhatsApp and more departments
Meta's layoffs have not stopped in recent years, with Mark Zuckerberg's company saying 2023 would be the year of efficiency and the workforce has been reorganized on various occasions since then. This time, the situation facing workers is not as widespread as on other occasions.
This situation at Meta affects all departments, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs, and some people affected by the layoffs have posted on social media about the company's decision.
The reorganization within Meta led to workers being told on the same day that they would no longer be part of the company. The most popular case is that of Jane Manchun Wong, who was part of the Threads team and has gained massive notoriety in recent months.
It is still unknown what will happen to these vacant positions, but everything indicates that Meta will eliminate them or replace them with workers from within the workforce who were not victims of this new wave of restructuring within the company.
From The Verge , they were able to reach Dave Arnold, a spokesperson for Meta, to comment on the situation the company is going through and get some perspective on future plans after the new staff reorganization:
“Currently, some Meta teams are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and localization strategy.”
“This includes moving some equipment to other locations and changing roles for some employees. In situations like these, when a role is eliminated, we strive to find other opportunities for affected employees.”
The spokesperson's statement seems to suggest that this process has been planned for several months. Of course, the situation seems complicated and it does not appear that this is the last employee reorganization that Meta will carry out before the end of 2024.
