Learn about the types of memory cards, the difference between their symbols

Learn about the types of memory cards, the difference between their symbols, and how to distinguish between them and choose the best one before you buy any one of them.

Perhaps the only thing we rely on when choosing a new memory card is its storage capacity, as some people think that buying a memory card is simple and does not require any experience or knowledge to choose it.

Choosing a memory card randomly or without prior experience may lead to many problems in your phone, the most important of which is the slowness of the phone or that it will not work at all, so in this topic I will talk about five things you should take into consideration when buying a new memory card!

1- Buy a memory card compatible with your port:

If you look closely at the memory card, you will notice that there are several different types of memory cards, and I mean that even if your phone's port supports small memory cards, i.e.

the microSD Slot port, this does not mean that any small microSD memory card will work on it, as there are three types of memory cards as follows:

- microSD: Its size can reach up to 2 GB and works on all devices.

- microSD HC: Its size can range from 2 GB to 32 GB and only works on devices that support SDHC and SDXC technology.

- microSD XC: Its size can range from 32 GB to 2 TB (although the largest available space at the moment is 512 GB, this technology supports up to 2 TB theoretically) and it only works on devices that support SDXC technology only.

2- Memory card size:

When we talked about microSD XC technology, we said that it supports very large sizes. Does this mean that if it is supported on our phones, we can use the size we want?
Actually, the answer is no, as there is a specific size for each device that can handle it. For example, the HTC One M9 phone officially supports a 128 GB memory card, and I do not think that a larger memory card will work on it.

3- Ultra High Speed Technology:

This technology offers high speed and is available in  cards that work with SDHC and SDXC technology and provides high performance, as the speed of the first version of it, UHS 1, reaches 104 megabytes per second and the second version, UHS 2, reaches 312 megabytes per second. Usually, the two classes that work with this technology are called: UHS Class 1 and UHS Class 3.
But you must be careful that your phone supports this technology to benefit from it fully, as its speed drops to 25 megabytes per second in old ports.

4- Choosing the right speed:

It is important to know the speed of the memory card before choosing it , and you can find out by looking at the card's class, as there are four classes and their speeds are as follows:
- Class 2: Its speed is at least 2 megabytes per second.
- Class 4: Its speed is at least 4 megabytes per second.
- Class 6: Its speed is at least 6 megabytes per second.
- Class 10: Its speed is at least 10 megabytes per second.

5- The correct choice for correct use:

Buying a good memory card doesn't mean buying the biggest and fastest card out there, but you have to buy the right card for the purpose you want to use it for, as the prices of high-spec cards are still very high.

If you want to store low-resolution videos, you can use a Class 2 card, but if you want to store very high-resolution videos (4K Video), then you should look for a very high-speed card.

In conclusion, the memory card is one of the things that can change your use of the phone for the better if you choose it correctly, or for the worse if you choose it wrong, so you have to be very careful when thinking about buying a new memory card.
