Google Maps Reveals Mysterious Hidden Door in Antarctica

Most people use Google Maps to figure out how to get somewhere. But others spend their afternoons looking at strange images on satellite maps. Like this supposed secret door in Antarctica.

It was on Reddit , of course, where they found a hidden door in the heart of Antarctica, at coordinates 69°00'50″S 39°36'22″E on Google Maps. You can see it in the opening image of the story.

As expected, conspirator's have emerged out of nowhere, claiming it's a secret American, Russian, Chinese and even Japanese base. Others say it's the entrance to the hidden world of Agartha in the middle of the Earth. Some also claim it's the home of the Yeti, the escape pod from Star Trek, and even the door that came down from the plane. They've even said it could be the room at the end of the world.

“It’s an iceberg that drifted away and is now stuck and melting in place,” Bethan Davies, a professor of glaciology at Newcastle University, told the New York Post. “There are several other icebergs you can see in the area.”

Professor Martin Siegert, co-director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and Environment at Imperial College London, gives the same answer: “It is simply a flow of ice around a solid barrier beneath the ice, also affected by melting and refreezing of the ice.”

He continues: "What looks like a gate in Antarctica is a short rocky outcrop of hills caused by receding ice. There are two parallel snow tails forming either side of the 'gate', and those tails show the direction of the wind."

There may be many explanations for this “secret door” revealed by Google Maps, but the logical explanation is that it is just an iceberg emerging from the ice.
