Google allows customization of audio summaries in NotebookLM tool
Google has announced new updates to its AI-powered notes and search tool NotebookLM , including new features primarily related to audio summaries.
The tool offers the platform’s “Audio Overviews” feature to provide a podcast-like audio summary of specific content. This feature started with written content, but has expanded to include YouTube videos , and it works based on the sources that the user enters into the tool.
Google has now added new options to the “Audio Readings” feature, as users can now enter specific instructions before generating the audio summary. Google explains examples of this, such as directing the tool to focus on one topic or adjusting the speech level to suit the target audience.
The company says it's like giving the AI a "quick note" before it starts generating the audio summary.
Google has added new background listening options, which allow users to play audio summaries while doing other activities within NotebookLM. Google says users can search for sources, get citations, and explore relevant quotes “without interrupting the audio.”
It is worth noting that the company has removed the “Beta” label from the NotebookLM tool, indicating that the trial period has ended and the tool is available to users on a general scale.
The company also announced an upcoming expansion of the tool for commercial use under the name NotebookLM Business, which will include enhanced features for businesses, universities, and organizations. Businesses can apply to access and try out the commercial version.
