Blocking users is no longer the same as before in X They can see your posts even after blocking them
The social network X, which many still certainly call Twitter, is about to change a fundamental aspect of one of its most used functions: blocking.
Elon Musk has decided it's time to rethink how this blocking tool works, which many users consider necessary to not uninstall the app directly. It's true that it was announced in May that there would be changes, but now it seems that the date is closer than ever.
What does the change consist of? If you block someone, that person will still be able to see your public posts. The difference is that they won't be able to interact with you. No likes, no replies, no retweets.
According to the social network's engineering team, this will increase transparency and allow users to discover if someone is sharing harmful or private information about them.
User reactions have been, as expected, mixed. Some see this as a direct attack on their privacy and fear it will lead to increased online harassment. However, others argue that the ban on public accounts was easily avoided by creating new accounts, so the change doesn’t make a huge difference.
For his part, Musk justifies this decision as part of his fight for freedom of expression on the platform. His argument is that users should be able to see all public posts, even if they come from someone they have blocked.
This change adds to a long list of tweaks X has undergone since Elon Musk took the helm. Some have been well-received, others not so much. The truth is that the platform is constantly evolving, for better or worse, whether you like it or not.
How will this impact the user experience? It’s hard to predict. Some may find it useful to be able to view content from accounts they’ve blocked without having to interact with them. However, others may feel more vulnerable. Ultimately, only time will tell whether this decision will improve the platform or, on the contrary, lead to an increase in harassment.
