Xiaomi surpasses Apple to become the second company that sells the most phones worldwide
Xiaomi was the second-largest smartphone brand worldwide in August, according to the latest report from Counterpoint Research. The company overtook Apple for the first time since August 2021, thanks to a 22% year-over-year sales growth.
Although Xiaomi’s smartphone sales remained stable throughout August, the sharp decline in iPhone sales has provided the Chinese company with an incentive to consolidate its second place in the market, a position it hasn’t held since August 2021, the last time it managed to overtake Apple.
Analysts believe that Xiaomi’s decision to change its product strategy, reduce the number of launches within each market segment and strengthen its marketing efforts were key decisions that helped the company achieve this second position. Likewise, its increasingly aggressive entry into the premium phone segment, with the MIX and Ultra series models, also contributed to its performance.
This is undoubtedly great news for the company, which continues to reap good results throughout this year 2024. Just a few weeks ago, while presenting its financial results for the second quarter of the year, it explained that the business is going from strength to strength with the company’s smartphone sales, with a total of 42.2 million smartphones sold worldwide during the second quarter. In other words, an increase of 28.1% compared to the same period last year.
With the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro hitting the market, it is very likely that Xiaomi will temporarily return to third place throughout September.
However, the Chinese company already has a plan to try to continue growing despite the arrival of the new Apple phones, and is set to launch two new affordable flagships that will arrive at the end of September, under the name Xiaomi 14T and Xiaomi. In addition, everything seems to indicate that it will be accompanied by the international version of the Xiaomi MIX Flip, the company's first "clamshell" foldable device.
