Snapchat launches a tool to generate video clips using artificial intelligence
The tool allows select creators to generate AI videos from text prompts, and soon from image prompts.
Snapchat says it's making the tool available in beta on the web starting today for a small subset of creators.
At this time, Snapchat has no plans to make its AI video generator available to anyone other than creators.
The platform did not release any additional details about the AI video generation tool during the keynote, while a company spokesperson said the tool is powered by the company's core video models.
“We know it’s important for our community to be aware when AI is being used to generate content, so we’re using icons and context cards to let you know when footage is being generated using our AI video generator,” said Cece Morkogiannis, the company’s vice president of product, during the keynote.
All content generated by our AI video generator includes a watermark that remains visible when the content is downloaded and shared.
A Snapchat spokesperson said the company's models undergo safety assessments and testing to prevent the generation of harmful content and that it has additional safety measures in place during the model training process, in the generation phase, and in the output phase.
Snapchat's announcement puts the company ahead of its social media peers that have yet to release AI text-to-video generators, including Instagram and TikTok.
In 2022, Mattia unveiled a tool called Make-A-Video that allows text to be converted into video, though it has not released it to the public.
Snapchat hopes to take on startups like Runway, as well as established companies like Adobe and OpenAI.
Adobe and OpenAI plan to release AI text-to-video generators to the public later this year.
Since Snapchat hasn't released any examples of the output of its AI video generator, it's unclear how its product might perform compared to other tools.
