Since I put my phone on silent mode, I've noticed four clear improvements in my life.
It would be strange if none of your friends were die-hard fans of this practice. In fact, some find it annoying, because you call someone and they don’t answer, and they don’t answer WhatsApp either. Because they keep their phone on silent all the time. But there are plenty of reasons why you should think about whether you shouldn’t do it either.
Not many people would think about it because obviously the mobile phone is also a work tool and we probably have to pay attention to calls or messages from our bosses or colleagues.
But even with that in mind, we must remember that there is a solution, and it is very easy: both Android and iPhone already offer modes that allow you to configure notifications and sounds on a schedule. You can also consider buying a second cell phone, having one for your personal life and another for work.
However, it is not crazy to leave our cell phone on silent most of the time, or always (and if not always, at least outside of our working hours). Although you may be afraid of missing an important call, or missing a last-minute change sent to you by a friend via WhatsApp, you can easily adapt to always keeping your phone on silent.
I always keep it on silent. I can also make it silent during work hours, since during those hours I am connected to the computer and not waiting for phone calls. Here are the benefits I have noticed during this time:
- Helps you manage your time better
- Helps you focus
- Reduce stress
- Helps you live in the present.
- Let's talk about the points we mentioned above.
By eliminating distractions, you’ll notice that you lose focus less while working, or while dedicating time to your personal projects or hobbies. It doesn’t make sense to check your phone for every notification you receive, because the vast majority of them are irrelevant. New comment on Instagram? You can check it later, and nothing will happen if you don’t respond right away.
On the other hand, people with some social anxiety, or those who belong to that growing group of people who do not like talking on the phone, will appreciate living this way. You will not suffer from the stress of receiving an anonymous call and not knowing whether to answer or not. When you open your phone at the time of your choice, you can check if you have any missed calls, and you have time to decide whether to answer the call by calling again or, on the contrary, to ignore it.
Another great benefit is what you will notice when you are with others. Instead of giving the impression that you are ignoring your interlocutor by looking at your cell phone every now and then, you will be more present in the conversation if you put it on silent mode. Likewise, if you are one of those who use your cell phone when you are in a somewhat uncomfortable situation, or you are waiting for something, it will help you forget about your smartphone a little more and learn not to rely on it so much.
As for last-minute messages, if you are about to meet someone and need to keep an eye on your phone, you can disable silent mode right then and there.
Having said all this, we don’t have to be extreme, of course, and we do have to remember that in certain situations we might be interested in turning up the volume on our cell phones. For example, if we’re actively looking for work and waiting to be called in for an operation, or if we’re waiting for a call from our doctor. But outside of these situations, you shouldn’t have any problems with putting your phone on mute all the time. Your phone doesn’t have to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
