Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google unveil new augmented reality glasses

Last year, Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google announced a strategic partnership to develop a mixed reality headset that can be connected to a user’s smartphone. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon revealed in a recent interview with CNBC that the new product would be “a revolution in the world of technology.”

Amon added that he expects this product to become so popular that everyone who has a smartphone will have smart glasses to complement it. He pointed out that he hopes that smart glasses will become an integral part of daily life, like regular glasses or sunglasses, in order to achieve great success in this market.

Details of the partnership project between Samsung, Qualcomm and Google

Although the three-way partnership between Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google was announced as far back as February 2023, information about the project has been very limited. While the companies haven’t specified what kind of device they’re working on, most rumors have suggested that it will be a Samsung-made mixed reality smartglass, a more affordable competitor to the $3,500 Apple Vision Pro. Google also announced augmented reality (AR) smartglass at its Google I/O conference in May.

In an interview with CNBC, Amon expressed his great excitement about the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses launched last year, which are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 processor. He noted that generative  AI is the “missing ingredient” for expanding the mixed reality market. He added that the AI will run on the device and in the cloud, and some tasks will be performed on the glasses and on the phone, but ultimately, it will be entirely new experiences.
