Qualcomm makes bid to acquire Intel

Qualcomm, the current leader in mobile processors, has recently made an offer to acquire Intel, the Wall Street Journal reported .

The newspaper relied on undisclosed sources, adding that the deal is “not yet confirmed,” which means that a final agreement may not be reached. The newspaper also did not reveal the financial details of this offer.

There were previous unconfirmed rumors that Qualcomm was interested in buying some of Intel's chip design divisions .

Even if the deal goes through, it will certainly be subject to government regulatory oversight to ensure it doesn't violate antitrust laws, and Qualcomm may have to give up some Intel parts to get regulatory approval.

Intel has seen its performance decline significantly over the past year, as many investors believe that the company, which was once dominant in chip design and manufacturing, has failed to catch up with the current revolution in artificial intelligence led by other companies, most notably Nvidia.

Earlier this year, Intel revealed that its financial results fell short of expectations, and announced plans to lay off 15,000 employees by the end of 2024, representing about 15% of its total workforce.

More recently, Intel announced additional cost-saving plans, including suspending plans to build two factories and spinning off its chip manufacturing business into an independent company .

Qualcomm continues to lead the way in mobile processors, but it is also looking to strengthen its presence in the personal computer market.

Last year, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon X series of processors based on the ARM architecture and designed for computers running Windows 11.

Most computer manufacturers are currently offering laptops with some version of Snapdragon X processors with distinctive designs, long battery life, and support for artificial intelligence features.
