OpenAI Launches New Voice Mode for ChatGPT Subscribers

OpenAI has announced the launch of its new ChatGPT voice mode. The long-awaited feature will be available this week to all paid Plus and Team users.

The Sam Altman-led company introduced ChatGPT’s new voice mode in May of this year. It promised at the time that an alpha version would arrive soon, but that didn’t end up happening. OpenAI delayed the limited initial release until last July to address security issues. Now, it’s finally starting to become available to everyone, and it’s doing so with a bunch of new features.

OpenAI has removed the ability to mimic the way others speak, but has added improvements like personalized instructions that will allow us to tweak how the system responds, memory to recall important information from previous interactions, and five new voices.

As is often the case with this type of launch, the rollout is being done in stages. Once the advanced voice mode is available to you, you’ll receive a notification in ChatGPT like the one you can see in the image below. The next step will be to tap “Continue” and choose your preferred voice.

It is worth noting that the voice mode, which is starting to arrive in almost all countries of the world starting today, will also be a bit different from the one we saw in the initial demo. OpenAI has not yet integrated vision capabilities, that is, those that allow the application to see the world through our device’s camera and enrich interactions. This capability is expected to arrive “at a later time.”
