According to a report from Economic Daily News , OpenAI appears to have opted to use the 1.6nm manufacturing node, known as the A16, instead of using the current N4 or N3 node. Currently, OpenAI relies heavily on Nvidia's AI chips, which increases the costs of running ChatGPT. Developing its own AI chips could help the company reduce these costs.

What is TSMC?

TSMC, the leading Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer, has agreed to produce OpenAI’s new chips using the A16 node, a highly advanced manufacturing node. Although OpenAI initially planned to use the less expensive N5 node, it ultimately decided to use the A16 node. It’s worth noting that the A16 node uses the same GAAFET nanotransistors as the N2 node, but uses a new backside power delivery technology called Super Power Rail. One possibility is that OpenAI collaborated with Apple on developing these chips.
