Microsoft launches new Windows application
Microsoft has announced the launch of a new application called “Windows App ” , which allows users to run Windows and its applications on other systems.
The application will be available on Mac, iOS, and web browsers , in addition to another version for Android.
The new Windows app is a replacement for Microsoft Remote Desktop, which was used to connect to a copy of Windows running on a remote computer or server. For some users and tech organizations, it was an easy way to run Windows apps on devices that didn't support Windows natively.
The new Windows App provides a unified way to access users' computers that have Remote Desktop, as well as cloud-hosted systems such as Windows 365 and Microsoft Dev Box, as well as remotely hosted applications provided by companies or educational institutions.
According to Hilary Brown, Microsoft's Windows product manager, the app is a "secure gateway to Windows across Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop, and Remote Desktop Services, as well as Microsoft Dev Box."
In addition to unifying many services into one app, the Windows App brings new features such as easier switching between accounts, improved device management for technical administrators, and support for Windows 365.
The new Windows app is a complete replacement for Remote Desktop, and if that app exists it will automatically update to become a Windows App.
On Windows, the Remote Desktop Connection app will remain available, while the new Windows app will only be used for other Microsoft services, requiring a Microsoft account to sign in, unlike other systems where it can be used without an account.
The new Windows App offers almost the same features as the previous app, including support for multiple displays, redirection of devices such as cameras and microphones, and support for dynamically changing the screen resolution while resizing the app window.
