Google Meet Adds Improved Picture-in-Picture Experience

Google Meet App

Google Meet recently added an improved Picture-in-Picture feature to Chrome on desktop, which will automatically open when you change tabs. Previously, you manually enabled PiP from a drop-down menu. Now, it will “automatically enable when you change tabs during a meeting.”

This small but impactful update will help ensure that your meeting remains visible and accessible if you need to switch tabs to take notes, view meeting-related documents, and more. When Google Meet first introduced Picture-in-Picture in 2022, it was a grid of video sources only. In 2023, a major update rolled out that introduced a vertical layout with controls to raise your hand, turn captions on/off, and use in-meeting chat. This layout shares many similarities with the mobile app.

This new behavior is enabled by default, but you can disable it by going to the “Show site info” icon to the left of the URL in the address bar, and tapping the “Automatic Picture-in-Picture” toggle to disable it.

Google is rolling out this feature today and will be fully available in the coming weeks, and it's “available to all Google Workspace customers, individual Workspace subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts” using the Chrome browser on desktop.
