Goodbye to your Gmail email Google is closing accounts forever, and you can't avoid it unless you hurry up and do this
After a very bad 2023, with mass layoffs and the rise of new competitors like OpenAI and Microsoft in the field of artificial intelligence, Google started making difficult decisions. For example, the “everything is free” principle at Google is gone, and paid services and features are becoming more common; but perhaps the most controversial decision was the closure of Gmail accounts.
With 1.8 billion users, Gmail is one of the largest services on the Internet; but accumulating such a number of accounts also has a downside, especially if the vast majority of them are free. We’re talking about storage: Google invests a lot of money in servers and hard drives just to store all your emails and attachments. Another reason for closing accounts is security; many abandoned accounts are hijacked by hackers to carry out phishing or social engineering attacks.
For all this, Google announced last November that it would begin cleaning up accounts that its users had abandoned; and now, Forbes warns that the company will close Gmail accounts again, perhaps in a second batch after the first one at the beginning of the year.
First of all, it should be made clear that Google will never close your account without prior notice. Once you log in to Gmail and check your email from time to time, you should already know that they will close your account if you do not log in for a long time; Google will send several emails to everyone affected by this decision, over several weeks.
It is also worth noting that Google will never close accounts that are in use; specifically, Google will mark an account as “inactive” if it has not been used for two years. This does not mean that the account will be closed after two years, just that after that period Google reserves the right to close it at any time.
To prevent our Gmail account from being closed, we just have to use Google services. Specifically, we have to do one of the following, although we have to remember to log in with the Google account we want to save before doing so:
- Read or send email on Gmail
- Or log in to your Google Drive account.
- Or watch a video on YouTube
- Or share a photo with Google Photos.
- Or by downloading an application from the Google Play Store
- Or use Google search
- Or sign in to an app or website using your Google account.
