Gmail Announces New Feature to Respond to Emails Faster Thanks to Gemini

Gemini is Google’s big bet to compete with AI from Microsoft and OpenAI, so it was only a matter of time before it made its way to apps like Gmail. The company said a month ago that the app would feature an AI-powered email search system that would help manage your inbox.

Google has decided to revamp the Gmail interface to improve the user experience. One of the first features the company announced is smart responses within the app. This option has been around for seven years, but it has been improved with the help of Gemini.

Gmail uses machine learning from Google with a Smart Reply option to suggest three quick responses to emails. The AI is able to read messages and generate simple texts, saving users a lot of time, although it has its limitations. Smart Replies aren’t very accurate for complex emails or if you intend to provide a long response.

Google has confirmed that it’s working on improving Smart Reply responses with Gemini. Right now, the option is limited to simple responses like “Sounds good!”, “Thanks so much for your help,” or “Yes, I’m working on that.” That will change with the arrival of contextual Smart Replies, which will offer suggestions that better fit the purpose of the message.

Gmail's new Gemini feature is activated when you start replying to an email. Google offers suggestions at the bottom of the screen, and you can swipe over each one to quickly preview the text.

When you've selected the option that best fits the message, simply click on it. The answer will appear in the text box and you can edit it if Gemini doesn't get it quite right.

This feature is not enabled by default, but you have to enable “smart features and personalization” in Gmail. Google announced in a blog post that it is now available to some users, while others will have to wait a few weeks as the company gradually implements it.
