Huawei has once again demonstrated its power with its new Mate XT smartphone, a three-foldable smartphone. Just seven hours after bookings began, around 1.3 million people signed up to buy the device, showing significant market interest.

The bookings, which officially began on Saturday at 12:08 p.m., are a blow to the Chinese giant's table a few hours before Apple launches its iPhone 16 in the United States, and Huawei will launch the first triple-fold smartphone on the market that was officially introduced this Tuesday.

The Mate XT, which will be available in red and black, will go on sale on September 20 in China, with no expectation that it will reach the rest of the international market, although Huawei has yet to reveal full details about the price and specifications of the device.

Huawei's decision to launch the Mate XT around the same time as Apple's new iPhone 16 indicates a clear strategy for direct competition. In a context where Huawei is facing international sanctions and restrictions, the company appears to have focused its attention on dominating the domestic market. "The Chinese market is critical for Huawei, and the launch of the Mate XT right after Apple introduced its iPhone 16 is a calculated move to capture more market share," they say from Tech Insights.

The foldable smartphone market has grown significantly in recent years. According to a report by Canada's Tech Insights, global shipments of these devices increased by 85% year-on-year during the second quarter of 2023. Huawei currently leads the sector, followed by Samsung and Vivo.
