Duolingo Brings AI to Your Language Learning Journey

Mobile learning platform Duolingo has announced new features, including mini-adventure games and video calls to help with language learning.

The new features were announced during the platform’s annual conference Duocon 2024 , and represent a push by the platform to leverage advanced artificial intelligence to enhance the learning experience for millions of users around the world.

“Our mission is to make the world’s best education accessible to everyone,” said Luis von Ahn, CEO of Duolingo, in a statement. “We believe technology is the best way to do that, and with new AI-powered features like Video Call and Adventures, we’re creating new, immersive ways to practice languages and build confidence.”

According to the platform, the new video call feature is a leap forward in language practice for learners. The AI-powered tool allows Duolingo Max subscribers to engage in spontaneous, real-life conversations with Lily, one of the platform’s most popular personalities.

The video call feature simulates natural conversation and provides a personalized, interactive training environment. Beginner learners can benefit from the feature because the video call is designed to adapt to their skill level.

By giving learners the opportunity to converse in real time, video calling builds the confidence needed to communicate effectively in real-world situations.

The video calling feature is available to Duolingo Max subscribers learning English, Spanish, and French. The feature should be coming soon to Portuguese, Italian, and German lessons.

The platform unveiled Adventures, an innovative, game-like exploration experience that immerses learners in the platform’s vibrant world.

For the first time, users can explore dynamic settings and storylines, and interact with beloved platform characters.

Adventures allows learners to apply their language skills to real-life scenarios, from checking their passports to ordering coffee, mixing fun with functional learning. Adventures is available on Android and iOS devices.

Only one adventure is available per unit of study, and is only available to English speakers learning French, and Spanish speakers learning English.

In March, the platform said that there were game-like projects in development, in recognition of how games can help accelerate learning.
