ChatGPT Messages Are Making a Stir | Now AI Can Start a Conversation With You
ChatGPT messages are a topic of conversation across social media, with many users reporting on social media that ChatGPT has started a conversation with them; in one such example from Reddit, ChatGPT asked the user how their first week of high school was going; when asked if they started the message, OpenAI proudly replied yes, then expanded that they could now start a conversation to follow up on things they had previously discussed. Another user claimed in the comments that the AI asked them about health symptoms they had previously discussed with them.
New ChatGPT Messages Feature
As proof of the new feature, the user also shared a link to their conversation, showing that ChatGPT had indeed started the conversation without being asked. Despite some skepticism, one Twitter user demonstrated how to fake the chat.
Regardless, people were excited about this kind of feature, whether it was real or not. Checking in on your first day of high school or your health shows a (somewhat terrifying) sense of human empathy, but we think of more routine reminders.
How many times have you searched for something like plans for an upcoming trip and then forgotten what you searched for – ChatGPT messages can now remind you to book a table at that restaurant they recommended or plan your visit to that famous landmark you must see so that your planning efforts don’t go to waste. However, this appears to have been a bug, not an intentional addition to ChatGPT that is being A/B tested.
ChatGPT messages: fact or fiction?
OpenAI has now responded, telling Futurism in a statement that it has addressed an issue where ChatGPT appeared to be starting new conversations, adding that the issue occurred when the model was trying to respond to a message that wasn't sent correctly and came up empty, as a result, either giving a generic response or relying on ChatGPT's memory.
This means, at least for now, that ChatGPT won't be able to start a conversation, though given the level of buzz this case has generated, we wouldn't be shocked to see OpenAI start working on something similar.
