Canva surprises users with price increases of up to 300%

Canva , the popular design platform, has announced a significant increase in its subscription prices, especially for Canva Teams users, with increases of up to 300%. The company justifies this change by integrating new AI tools that, in its opinion, have changed the user experience.

Imagine you’re paying $120 a year for Canva and suddenly you get an email saying you now have to pay $500. Yep, almost five times more! Many users have reacted with surprise (and anger), but Canva says the increase is justified by its “expanded product experience.” While the platform has launched several new features, like Magic Media, a text-to-image generator, and Magic Expand, a tool for expanding backgrounds on images, the increase is pretty steep.

Opinions were divided on the move. On the one hand, some users felt that Canva was no longer as affordable as Adobe once was, and decided to change it. On the other hand, those who heavily use the new AI tools could see the added value. In my opinion, the real problem is how this increase was communicated: suddenly and only through emails, which was not well received by loyal users.

Canva could be betting on the long term. With plans for an IPO in 2026, it seems clear that they are looking to attract investors by showing a stronger revenue base. It remains to be seen whether this strategy will work or will it alienate a large portion of their user base.
