BlueSky grows in popularity after X ban in Brazil
Twitter's former app X is currently facing a ban in Brazil on the order of a Supreme Court judge, and Brazilian users appear to be turning to BlueSky, an alternative social network in droves, as a legal and safe alternative to the X platform after the ban.
Why everyone is turning to Bluesky
“Brazil, you are experiencing the highest levels of activity ever on Bluesky!” Bluesky’s official account announced in a post. “There will almost certainly be some outages and performance issues, we’ve never seen traffic like this before. Bear with us!” said Bluesky developer Paul Friese.
What is BlueSky and how is it different from Twitter?
Bluesky’s app is very similar in look and function to Twitter, but it’s a decentralized social media platform built on the AT protocol (which Bluesky also developed). In a post dated 5:12 p.m. EST, Friese said Bluesky is seeing 1,000 events per second — a “new milestone” — on its “relay,” which essentially acts as a data hose for the platform. Last Friday, Bluesky announced it had added 500,000 new users “over the past two days.”
