Apple Brings Activation Lock in iOS 18 to Combat iPhone Theft
As part of its efforts to combat iPhone theft , Apple has announced the addition of Activation Lock to iPhone parts in iOS 18. This feature aims to link your Apple account not only to your iPhone, but also to components such as the battery, cameras, and display based on their individual serial numbers.
How does activation lock work?
When a used iPhone part is detected, the device will ask for the original device owner's Apple ID password, which is intended to prevent parts from stolen iPhones from being used in other devices.
Importance of Activation Lock
This feature is an important step in combating the counterfeit and stolen parts market, which used to be a large black market due to the lack of a mechanism to prevent their use. With Activation Lock, there may be some restrictions on repairs of devices that use used parts. The calibration capabilities of the part may be limited if it is discovered that it was obtained from another device that has Activation Lock or Lost Mode.
Very Important Notes About Activation Lock
Activation Lock will only be available in iOS 18, which will be released to the public on September 16. This update requires an iPhone XR or later.
- Activation Lock for parts currently applies to iPhone only, and will not work on iPads with iPadOS 18.
- There may be attempts to bypass Activation Lock, but Apple is working to strengthen the security of its system.
Ultimately, Activation Lock in iOS 18 is an important step in protecting iPhones from theft and the use of non-genuine parts.
