Apple Adds 12 Mac Computers to Its Old Products List You Should Avoid Buying Them
Apple today updated its legacy hardware lists. Three Mac computers are being added to the legacy list, and nine are moving from the legacy category to the old list...
These are different models of MacBooks, MackBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac, that Apple released for sale between 2015 and 2018.
If your Apple computer falls into these categories, sit back, take a deep breath... and see if your model is listed below.
Listing a device as obsolete is Apple’s “good” way of saying it’s retiring. It will no longer receive updates, but it can still be repaired at the App Store or an authorized retailer, as long as there are parts left. An Apple device becomes obsolete five years after it’s been no longer sold.
An Apple device goes from old to older after seven years of being discontinued. Apple Stores no longer repair it.
The one exception to all of this is batteries. If they fail or are out of stock, Apple will typically replace them up to 10 years after the device goes on sale, regardless of how old or old it is, as long as units are available.
Here you have the full list, with the years these retired models were offered for sale and added to the old list:
- MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2016)
- MacBook Air (13-inch, 2015)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports)
- MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, 2015)
-iMac (21.5-inch, 2015)
- iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch 2015)
- iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2015)
If you have one of these computers, it will continue to work without problems. If you need any repairs, it is better to do it quickly, before the parts run out.
Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between real retirement and planned obsolescence. But we have to realize that nine years on a computer is a long time to keep updating it, because hardware is getting older so quickly.
