Anker warns against using its batteries for iPhones due to fire risk
Anker, the electronics accessories company, has announced the recall of three models of external batteries compatible with the MagSafe technology for iPhones, due to the risk of fires.
This announcement came after the discovery of a manufacturing defect that causes damage due to overheating of the batteries.
The recalled products include the following portable chargers (power banks): Anker 334 MagGo (PowerCore 10K) with model number A1642, Anker Power Bank with model number A1647, and Anker 334 MagGo with model number A1652.
According to the company, some of the lithium-ion batteries used in these portable chargers “may pose a safety risk due to a manufacturing defect.”
The company said in its statement that “the lithium-ion battery in some affected charging units can overheat, which could cause plastic parts to melt, smoke to be released, and fires to break out.”
Anker explained that the affected products are those manufactured between January 3 and September 17, but decided to recall all units as an additional precaution to ensure the safety of users.
The company advised users who own any of these devices to “immediately stop using them” and store them in a safe place. It also asked them to check the device’s serial number on Anker’s website before filling out a replacement form to get a safe replacement.
The company concluded its statement by providing instructions on how to safely dispose of affected products, stressing the need not to throw them in household waste.
If you own one of the affected Anker products, you can check the model number on the bottom of the device to see if it is included in the recall.
