A new feature in Instagram Stories allows you to express your opinion directly
Instagram has added a new feature that allows you to add comments to Instagram Stories, which are temporary posts that many people use more than traditional posts.
What is the new Instagram Stories feature?
Previously, replying to Instagram Stories sent a private message visible only to the person who posted the content. Adding comments adds a more public way to respond to Stories, however the ability to comment is primarily more limited: Only people who follow the poster and who the poster follows will be able to leave a comment. Instagram explains how most of this works in this video.
New Instagram Stories Feature Specifications
Just like Stories, comments are temporary and will last for up to 24 hours; Instagram spokesperson Emily Norfolk says users will have the option to turn comments on or off for any Story they share. It’s unclear whether comments will be archived after a Story post expires, but we’re hoping that all clears up over time.
Instagram has been steadily adding new features to platforms like Reels and Stories that suggest the company sees them as primary places for users to share with friends, rather than just casual content meant to be scrolled through. Earlier this summer, the platform added disappearing “notes” (essentially comments) to posts on the grid and Reels, with the goal of drawing more attention to how your friends interact with the content. These temporary notes disappear after three days, and users can choose who can see their notes — either mutual followers or a select list of close friends. The temporary notes are placed above the post, making comments from friends more prominent.
Instagram also announced today that some likes on posts will now appear more prominently as floating hearts, similar to how they appear on disappearing notes.
