Windows 11 will change to HDR settings for you automatically.

Automatic switching is something you may enable from Windows 11's Settings.

Have you ever turned Windows 11 HDR on and off to see HDR material without the rest of your screen becoming washed out? A potential solution to this irritation has been discovered in a recent version, build 27686, which was made available in the Canary Channel.

HDR video streaming is now possible even when HDR is turned off thanks to this new parameter hidden within the HDR options. When playing a game or watching a high dynamic range movie, users no longer need to navigate to the settings to turn on and off HDR.

Microsoft did not, however, formally introduce this functionality in the build 27686 release notes at first. Rather, the Redmond, Washington-based software giant changed the blog article when tech enthusiast @phantomofearth saw it and shared it on X, the former name for Twitter. Check out the Settings > System > Display > HDR section to see if your setup supports HDR if you are already running the most recent Canary build.

HDR wallpaper compatibility in JXR format is anticipated to be added in the next edition of Windows 11, version 24H2. Many additional improvements are also included in Build 27686, such as increased energy efficiency for longer battery life and upgrades to the Windows Sandbox Client, which is now available as a Microsoft Store app.  The most recent changelog is available here.  (Image courtesy of @phantomofearth)
