Members of the US Congress have called TP-Link routers a “national security threat.” The concern comes after recent revelations that the company’s devices have potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malicious actors, including foreign governments. The whole situation came about thanks to a letter sent this week to the US Secretary of Commerce. The document, signed by Congressmen John Molenaar and Raja Krishnamurthy, noted that TP-Link devices present an “unusual degree of vulnerabilities.” This was more than enough reason to demand a response from the company, and if it is not appropriate, it will jeopardize the continuity of TP-Link’s business in the US.
Tougher regulations for foreign technology companies operating in the United States are also under consideration. These regulations could include transparency requirements about ownership and security practices, as well as periodic audits to ensure that products do not pose a national security risk.
This is not the first time the US government has leveled this type of accusation against companies; the most notable case was Huawei in the US.
