Solve the problem of the external graphics card not working on the computer or laptop

Relying on an external graphics card has become important, not optional. If you need a computer to run some high-graphics games, watch high-quality videos, or edit and montage videos, you need an external graphics card.

But the problem that some may face is that the external graphics card suddenly stops working, whether on a computer or laptop. You notice this when you try to run a game and find it very slow, unlike usual, and the same is the case with videos, due to the start of reliance on the internal card that comes with your device, which is undoubtedly weak, whether from Intel or AMD . If you are one of those who suffer from this problem, we have prepared this topic in which we explain some effective solutions to make the external graphics card work again.

Solve the problem of the external graphics card not working:

1- Check if the graphics card is installed on the motherboard:

The problem may first appear when you receive a notification from Windows telling you that the display driver stopped responding, which means that the external display card may actually be connected to the motherboard, but Windows does not recognize it and does not consider it present.

To make sure of this, go to Device Manager, by pressing the Windows logo + the letter R together, and from the Run window type the command devmgmt.msc and then press the ENTER button on the keyboard, then double-click on Display adapters to display the graphics cards connected to the device as shown in the image below.

If you find that the system recognizes both display cards (internal and external), this means that the display card is working and you only need to try the following solutions, but if you find only one card, then only the internal card is readable, and in this case you will need to check that the display card is properly installed on the motherboard.

2- Delete the graphics card driver and update it:

If the external card appears among the graphics cards connected to the device in the Device Manager window but at the same time it does not work and you cannot play games on it, you can simply uninstall the driver by right-clicking on it and choosing Uninstall as shown in the following image, and from the confirmation window, click Yes. After that, restart the computer or laptop.

Now go to the Device Manager window again where Windows is supposed to install a temporary driver for the external graphics card. If so, download the latest driver for the graphics card and install it instead of the temporary driver. After all this, the card should work without problems if the problem is in the driver.

You can check that the appropriate driver is installed for the graphics card. We explained this in the article on the official methods for updating the Nvidia graphics card driver, and we also talked about the methods specific to AMD graphics cards .
