Magic Eraser Comes to iPhone: Here's How You Can Remove Unwanted Elements in Photos

Apple is preparing to launch a new AI tool that aims to expand the editing options for iPhone users. The feature, called Clean Up, is part of the latest beta versions of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1, so it’s currently in development.

The goal of this option is to allow users to remove unwanted objects from their photos with a simple touch on the screen, something that other brands like Google and Samsung already do, through artificial intelligence.

This photo editing tool uses advanced machine learning models to identify and remove unwanted elements in photos . With Clean Up, Apple joins a growing number of apps that are integrating AI into their functionality to improve the quality and accuracy of photo editing, competing directly with established tools like Google’s Magic Eraser .

The operation of this tool is based on two main options for users: automatic selection and manual selection. In automatic selection mode, the Photos app automatically identifies background elements that can be removed, such as lampposts, people who are not part of the main subject of the photo, or any other objects that distract from the desired composition.

Once selected, these items can be removed with a single touch. Manual selection, on the other hand, allows users to have more precise control over the process, surrounding the objects or people they want to remove, providing a greater level of customization in photo editing.

One of the features of Clean Up is its ability to not only remove selected objects, but also erase their shadows and reflections, which contributes to a cleaner, more natural result. Apple has focused heavily on ensuring that edited images retain their visual integrity, minimizing distortion and preserving the original quality of the image.

Although the Clean Up feature is already available in the beta versions of iOS 18.1 for developers, access to it is currently restricted. Apple has decided, for now, that only approved developers will have the opportunity to test this tool before its official launch, scheduled for October 2024, about a month after the launch of the iPhone 16.
