What is the narrative?

In India, YouTube has announced a large increase in the cost of its Premium membership at all tiers. An X user named @MrSahilBawa first brought attention to the issue when he uploaded a notification from YouTube outlining the increase in cost for the Family package. The monthly cost of this specific plan has increased significantly, from ₹189 to ₹299, a 58% increase.

YouTube argues that raising fees will improve the service.

YouTube has defended the price rise, citing it as an essential step to keep providing top-notch features and services. The statement from the firm read, "We take these decisions seriously, and this upgrade will help us maintain our commitment to improving Premium and supporting the artists and creators you enjoy on YouTube." Up to five people can share a single subscription under the Family plan.

The price increase also affects other plans.

Other subscription plans are also impacted by the price rise. The individual monthly tier now costs ₹149 instead of ₹129, a 15% increase, while the student monthly plan has increased by 12.6%, from ₹79 to ₹89. The individual monthly, quarterly, and annual prepaid packs are now priced at ₹159, ₹459, and ₹1,490, respectively. Prepaid plans have not been immune from this adjustment.
