Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Features

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Design

Like the other Pixel 9 phones Google has launched, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold gets a major design update compared to last year. The new Pixel Fold is narrower than last year and takes on an almost square shape when unfolded. This also results in better comfort when folded, resulting in a design similar to standard tablets.

General exterior design

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has seen a radical design update compared to the previous generation, becoming more elegant and thinner, now measuring 5.1mm thick when opened and 10.5mm when folded, this new design makes it more similar to traditional tablets.

Dimensions and Weight

Despite its slimness, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold weighs around 260 grams. This weight makes it a little heavier than some competitors, but the slimmer design makes it more comfortable to use.

Screen

As for the screen, it has seen significant improvements. It has lost the huge bezels that were present in the previous generation, and the front camera has been moved to a small hole in the screen, giving it a more modern look. Moreover, the back and front screens are covered with a protective layer of Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Frame and hinges

The frame is made from 100% recycled aluminum, giving it durability and strength, and the stainless steel hinge has been improved to be more resistant to repeated folding. The phone comes in stylish and modern colors, with a satin finish on the frame.

Before we start explaining the features of the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold phone, here is a summary of everything that happened at the conference to learn more about the latest devices that Google announced, a summary of the Google Pixel 9 conference and the most prominent things that Google announced

Screen

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold features a completely different design than the previous generation, which has contributed to improving the grip experience and ease of use. The new design includes a 20:9 aspect ratio for the outer screen, just like the OnePlus Open, and it is much wider than the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The 6.3-inch outer OLED screen offers a resolution of 1080 x 2424 pixels, with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, but it does not support dynamic change like the LTPO screen in the Pixel 9 or 9 Pro.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Features

In contrast, the internal “Super Actua” display opens to be almost square, measuring 8 inches and with a resolution of 2076 x 2152 pixels. The internal display supports dynamic refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz depending on the content. Both displays support HDR with HDR10+ and other codecs, in addition to a brightness of up to 1800 nits externally and 2700 nits internally.

Google claims this is the largest internal display on an Android phone sold in the US, but it lacks features like OnePlus Open Canvas and stylus support, which brings us to the new foldable Pixel's performance.

Performance

Like the other Pixel 9 phones, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold features Google's own Tensor G4 processor, which is a significant upgrade over the Tensor G2 found in the previous generation Fold, though the Tensor G4 doesn't seem as powerful as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 found in the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

As previously noted, the Tensor G4 is believed to be a weaker version of  the Samsung Exynos 2400. From the leaked documents, the Tensor G4 features an octa-core processor – one less than the Tensor G3. Despite using the latest Arm v9.2 cores, it gets a slight 10% performance boost over the previous generation, and retains the Tensor G3’s neural processor, image signal processor, and Titan M2 security module.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Features

While we will certainly see a performance boost compared to the first-generation Pixel Fold, the big benefit is improved performance efficiency and reduced heat production, however, the foldable design may lead to more heat buildup inside the device than traditional tablets.

Like the other Pixel 9 Pro phones, the Fold now comes with 16GB of RAM, however storage options remain limited, with Google letting buyers choose between 256GB and 512GB versions, without the 128GB or 1TB options as in the non-foldable Pixel 9 Pro.

The new Exynos 5400 modem on the Tensor G4 brings a satellite SOS feature for emergencies, though this feature will likely be limited in the US. Additionally, the device supports tri-band Wi-Fi 7, 5G, and wide-area GPS, and finally, it has Bluetooth 5.3.

Battery

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold's battery has a capacity of 4,650 mAh, which is about a 5% decrease from the first-generation battery's capacity of 4,821 mAh; this decrease, combined with larger screens and more powerful chipsets, could result in slightly reduced battery life.

The first Pixel Fold's battery wasn't really impressive, so you can expect a slight impact on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's battery life. Google claims it's designed for a full day of use, and we'll be testing that claim extensively during our review over the coming weeks.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes with wired charging, though Google doesn't reveal charging rates as clearly as it does with the other Pixel 9 Pro series. The previous generation of the phone charged at up to 30W, so we expect the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to be on the same level or better.

Additionally, the Fold supports wireless charging with compatible Qi chargers, however it doesn't appear to include reverse wireless charging. Hopefully, Google has bumped up the wireless charging rate to 15W as it did with other Pixel 9 phones, but this needs some testing to verify.

Camera

As for the entire Pixel 9 lineup, the Fold features the least impressive cameras of all. It retains the same 48MP main camera and 10.8MP 5x telephoto as the previous generation, while the ultrawide camera has been replaced with a slightly smaller 10.5MP sensor, increasing the viewing angle to 127 degrees. All of these cameras are actually smaller than the newer ones found on the Pixel 9 Pro.

Google has also upgraded the internal and external selfie cameras with new sensors, both of which are now 10MP with a wider 87-degree viewing angle. Although Google has not revealed details about the sensor size and other features of the cameras, the rear and selfie cameras can record video at up to 4K at 60fps, although the phone supports 8K video recording, but this may be due to its relatively weak thermal cooling capacity when it comes to foldable phones.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Features

Like the other Pixel 9 phones, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's cameras benefit from comprehensive software improvements. Although the cameras remain relatively small, the Fold offers all the familiar features like astrophotography, face detection, Night Vision, Top Shot, and more. Videos also get improvements, including Night Vision for video, Super Boost, Cinematic Pan, and Macro Focus video. Notably, we don't see the cinematic blur phenomenon, which could be a result of the phone's insufficient thermal performance. Additionally, the Fold lacks the new Super Res mode that improves videos captured with the Pixel 9 Pro's telephoto camera, despite the availability of the necessary hardware.

Finally, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has the same photo and video editing features like Magic Eraser, Best Take, Audio Magic Erase, Wind Noise Reduction, Zoom Enhance, and more.

Updates and software

The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold series disappointed many when it came to software, as they shipped with an earlier version of Android (version 14) instead of the recent Android 15, which is unusual for Google; the reason behind this older update could be a result of a rushed Pixel launch event or Google's greater focus on  AI features , but it's still unclear.

However, Pixel devices are expected to get the Android 15 update as soon as it becomes available. Currently, the standout features include new AI experiences, such as Pixel Screenshots that provide context for images and make it easier to organize them. These experiences leverage Google's Gemini Nano AI model for on-device processing.

For more demanding tasks, Google is leaning on the more powerful Gemini Advanced model , which is also available through the Gemini chatbot service for a fee. To deliver a powerful AI experience, Google is offering a Google One subscription with 2TB of external storage and a free year of Gemini Advanced. Fees may apply after the promotion ends. Access to Gemini Advanced and 2TB of Google Drive storage can be obtained for those who purchase the phone before a certain date.

Google also promised to provide updates to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold for seven years, and we hope Google keeps that promise despite ongoing questions about the durability of the devices.
