Goodbye to hidden cameras in hotels and elsewhere

Goodbye to hidden cameras in hotels and elsewhere.. Your Xiaomi phone will detect them in the next update

Now that the holidays are here, vacation apartments and holiday homes are among the first choices for spending the summer. However, these types of services carry certain requirements and certain risks, the most famous of which is the presence of hidden cameras.

It is common on social networks to find complaints about hotels and temporarily rented apartments with cameras installed in the most unexpected places. Therefore, one of the recommendations if we are going to use one of these services is to look for cameras first, in different ways: either look for suspicious lights, or use a flashlight so that the lens is reflected.

Now, Xiaomi may have a smarter solution: use your phone to find hidden cameras. The feature was discovered in the latest update to HyperOS, Xiaomi’s operating system that will reach version 2.0 this year; it will be called “Camera Scanner,” and will have two modes: wave search and lens search.

The first method takes advantage of the fact that many spy cameras use a WLAN (wireless local area network) connection to retransmit the video they record to an external location such as a computer or mobile phone.

This wireless connection is necessary because these cameras are so small that they usually do not have built-in storage. The scanner in HyperOS 2.0 will be able to find nearby WLAN devices via radio waves, indicating if we might have a hidden camera nearby.

The feature is also able to find cameras using a second, more traditional method: searching for lens reflections. In this case, when activating the function, we will have to move the phone, pointing the camera at locations where cameras are likely to be hidden, such as plants or furniture. Although it is unclear how exactly this system will work, it will likely be similar to other hidden camera search apps , possibly using infrared lights or even the camera flash to detect reflections.

These and other features are expected to arrive with HyperOS 2.0, the new version of the system that will arrive on Xiaomi, POCO and Redmi phones starting next October. In addition to this novelty, HyperOS 2.0 is expected to include features such as “RAM expansion” by 6 GB, using internal storage; although many phones already have something similar, and improvements in interface customization are also expected.
